Remembrance Sunday in York

This Sunday, our city comes together to pause, reflect, and remember those who served and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. York’s Remembrance events are always powerful, filled with pride, gratitude, and community spirit.

What’s happening

• At 10:20 am, the main parade will set off from Clifford’s Tower and make its way through the city to the war memorial in the Memorial Gardens, passing the Mansion House along the route.
• The ceremony begins around 10:58 am with the “Ode to the Fallen.” The Last Post and gun salute will mark 11:00 am, when the two-minute silence begins.
• After the service, the parade returns through St Helen’s Square and Coney Street, where the Mansion House flag will be lowered to half-mast.
• Later in the evening, at 6:30 pm, there will be a Service of Remembrance at St Lawrence Parish Church, featuring candle-lit tributes in the churchyard.

Why it matters

Remembrance Sunday is the moment we collectively honour the men and women of the armed forces who lost their lives in service. York has a deep military history, and this day allows the city to show its respect and gratitude. From veterans and cadets to families and civic leaders, the whole community gathers to reflect on courage, duty, and sacrifice.

How to take part

• Attend the ceremony: Arrive at Clifford’s Tower around 10:20 am or at the Memorial Gardens before 11 am to take part in the silence.
• Wear a poppy: A small gesture that carries huge meaning.
• Observe the two-minute silence: Even if you cannot attend, pause wherever you are at 11 am.
• Plan your route: Expect some road closures near the city centre from early morning to early afternoon.
• Bring the kids: It’s a great opportunity to teach them about respect, remembrance, and community.
• Stay until the end: Watching the parade make its return is always a moving sight.
