Martina Dramatherapy
About my work:
I am a Creative Arts Psychotherapist and EMDR trainee. I practice a person-centred approach, adjusting to the client’s particular needs and allowing them to take the lead within sessions, providing them with a safe space to explore whatever they feel they need to, with the option of utilising creative approaches. I have access to a wide range of dramatherapy approaches and techniques and have experience working with both children of all ages and adults. I work following a trauma informed approach and have extensive experience working with trauma survivors, including those with complex PTSD diagnosis. Dramatherapy can also support clients to work through issues such as anxiety, stress and depression.
EMDR sessions are also available at a reduced rate as I am currently a trainee EMDR therapist.
Get in touch if you would like to explore how creativity can be a part of your healing journey!
No creative experience necessary, we will find mediums that work for you! Playfulness and creativity can make my approach particularly suited to children and teenagers. It can support with worries around bullying, school transitions, anxiety, low mood and changes in the home environment.
What is dramatherapy?
Dramatherapy is a form of Psychotherapy. Dramatherapists are both clinicians and artists that draw on their knowledge of theatre and therapy to use as a medium for psychological therapy that may include story-making, music, movement, and art; to work with any issue that has presented itself.
Dramatherapy can allow us to incorporate somatic approaches, connecting to our body and tapping into our subconscious. It is a helpful approach when we need to go further than words alone can go!
What do sessions look like?
This really varies and will depend on the client, their preferences and their goals! Usually I will start with checking in and identifying what we want to address in the session. We don't have to use creative techniques every session, sometimes you might prefer just to talk through things, but creativity will be on offer! Some examples of what this might look like:
Creating art work around certain themes/feeling
Using imagery to inspire deeper reflections
Using metaphors to explore issues that feel too difficult to address
Movement to explore feelings or help you regulate
Finding stories to explore themes that connect to your own material
Creative writing to develop expression and self-compassion
What is EMDR?
“EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a unique, powerful therapy that helps people recover from problems triggered by traumatic events in their lives. It stops difficult memories causing so much distress by helping the brain to reprocess them properly, working with memory to heal the legacy of past pain.
EMDR therapy is best known for treating PTSD but can help with a range of mental health conditions in people of all ages including depression and anxiety.”
